I first jumped on board Google’s Webmaster Tools at Webmaster Central when they launched sitemaps. All the cool kids were doing it but I went for it with trepidation. I was still making a little money on some cheesy affiliate stores, and I didn’t want to let Google know about it too quickly. So I made multiple accounts, tried only showing parts of sites in site maps, ran a couple bots to update sitemaps, but it soon became more work and confusion than the results then could justify. I lost interest, and turned to other tracking and SEO tools. In spite of hearing from other webmasters how great webmaster tools had become, I still resisted. Besides I just love browsing my favorites folder of tools jumping from place to place trying to put together some picture of what is happening with my flock of sites.
Okay Google, I’m Back
I’m giving in and I’m adding my sites one at a time to one account. Yes Google, I’ve abandoned all my trickery and here are my sites. Please help me!
Right away I’m seeing I can improve my meta descriptions. Some are “too short,” some are duplicates. Hey if it’s important to Google, then it’s important to me. And I found a collection of error logs that are being indexed. So webmaster tools were useful to me immediately after entering a url and uploading the verification file. I’m sure this will elicit a big sarcastic “DUH!!” from a lot of you! What can I say? I can get entrenched in my ways. But I also enjoy new toys…I mean tools. I’ll be digging deeper into webmaster central now and may even dust off the ole sitemap bots.
