Godaddy has really boosted the number of upsale points.
I just hit one for their hosting when updating nameservers. They keep switching things around so I can’t click my way as quickly past the upsell roadblocks. Sure, they are doing a better job of monetizing their site, but how much dissatisfaction will arise? Will it pay in the end? Obviously they think so…

Buying and Selling Pets on Tagged

“Pets” Is a fun interactive feature on Tagged.com; if you can get past the problem of placing a value on people based on appearance. Similar to “Owned” on MyYearbook.com, users (Pets) are bought and sold with ever increasing value and the profits are split between the seller and their “Pet.” Maybe I’ve just had too much spare time this past week; Seems I’ve developed a Pets “Business Plan.” I’ll share my strategy so far for this game…just started messing with it recently. Chances are if you have your own “Pet Store” you are aware of these ideas, but maybe you also have some I’ve missed? (more…)

A Burst of Affiliate Networks?

My life has always been full of burstiness. I sometimes read an authors entire collection in a short period, I go on fasts, immerse myself in learning a new instrument, take up the study of religions, take spontaneous vacations, join a band… once I even grew a full 12″ in fifth grade. Maybe it’s my addictive personality or maybe I enjoy new things or maybe both, but there is nothing like a new idea or a fresh start to invigorate me. It’s like any baseball team during spring training.

Aaron Wall points out in this video some easy marketing benefits to starting with a blog. I’m already sold on building sites based around word press, for sheer ease of use. When you consider all the additional ways blogging “spreads your word” with trackbacks and feeds, I need a very strong reason to consider any other platform for development. (more…)

It seems to me that many successful types on the Internet have mastered some part of it, be it marketing, coding, design, writing, SEO, or they are a great manager of others that can do that stuff. Sure they can understand and handle all those other things, but it comes down to “Where should I spend my time?” Some of us gravitate toward our niche and can proclaim “I am a great graphic designer” or “I have SEO down cold!” or “I write 2 great articles every day before I’ve finished the first pot of coffee!” or “I find great ways to make money on line every day!” or “I can program anything!” or “My business is so organized I can’t fail!” (more…)

Revisiting Google Webmaster Tools

I first jumped on board Google’s Webmaster Tools at Webmaster Central when they launched sitemaps. All the cool kids were doing it but I went for it with trepidation. I was still making a little money on some cheesy affiliate stores, and I didn’t want to let Google know about it too quickly. So I made multiple accounts, tried only showing parts of sites in site maps, ran a couple bots to update sitemaps, but it soon became more work and confusion than the results then could justify. I lost interest, and turned to other tracking and SEO tools. In spite of hearing from other webmasters how great webmaster tools had become, I still resisted. (more…)

There may be nothing a webmaster fears more than a complete loss of their work, their domain, or the accumulated SEO and traffic. David Airey’s recent bout with a domain stealing cracker reminded me of existing dangers. The cracker used an exploit with G-mail to initiate a domain transfer. When Airey emailed the thief, he was met with taunts and demands for money for the domain. This was a shock to my sense of safety online. (more…)
