Not impressed with the answer to leaves changing colour. The tree is triggered into dormancy by the change in the light and dark periods of the day (street lights can affect the photo period causing injury or death). Less important factors include light intensity, water, and the completion of a reproductive cycle. Trees withdraw salvageable compounds from the leaves creating a colour chance and produces the hormone abscisic acid which causes the leaves to break off the tree.
